A high altitude Blaufrankisch born on the wind battered slopes of Spitzerberg’s Ried Kobeln- the top vineyard on the hill. From vines planted in 2008, yields are kept tiny, giving this wine some serious density and tannic presence.

Hand-harvested to avoid over ripeness, the berries undergo a gentle, open-vat wild ferment with partly whole clusters, then rest for 20 months in large old oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is powerful yet poised with dark cherry fruit, cranberry and violet aromas layered with a tangerine zest and tobacco. On the palate the silky structure and taut acidity weave through grippy tannins. It’s a Blaufrankisch of true complexity and really just starting to kick off its drinking window.

On the windswept slopes of Spitzerberg in Carnuntum, Dorli Muhr’s single-vineyard project has quietly grown into one of Austria’s most revered voices in Blaufränkisch. It all began in 1995 with just a 0.17-hectare plot — a gift from her grandmother — and grew through dogged persistence. Today, it spans around 12 hectares across 36 tiny, limestone-steep parcels, often tucked away behind a doctor’s appointment or a whispered family story.

Since 2020, Anna Muhr, Dorli’s daughter, has been a full partner in the project, sharing the rhythm of vineyard and cellar life. Every decision is deliberate: organic farming, vintage-spanning fermentations using spontaneous yeasts, a blend of whole clusters and foot-crushed grapes, followed by gentle aging in neutral wood. It’s a method that yields wines imbued with tension, clarity, and that electric sense of place, like a ballet dancer perfectly held in motion.

Between them, Dorli and Anna have turned Spitzerberg into a quietly radical studio for precision farming and expressive winemaking. With a new cellar built in 2022 featuring thick thermal walls and clever passive cooling, their standout Blaufränkisch — and a Syrah/Blaufränkisch blend that whispers elegance — now reach across 20 countries, often carrying praise that feels earned, not demanded.
