Orange by name but Heinrichs keep it delicate and precise. A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Roter Traminer and Muskat Ottonel, all grown biodynamically on both sides of Lake Neusiedl. Limestone and schist from the Leithaberg on one side, gravel and humus-rich soils on the other.

Hand-picked, fermented on skins for two weeks, then aged 18 months in amphora and big old oak casks, the wine is then bottled unfiltered with just a touch of sulphur.

The result? Amber in colour, grapefruit peel, spice, dried herbs and gentle floral aromatics. On the palate it’s juicy and textural but never heavy. There’s grip and structure, but not at the expense of freshness. It’s orange wine the Heinrich way: playful, soulful and seriously drinkable.

Nestled in Gols, at the eastern edge of Burgenland’s Neusiedlersee, Gernot and Heike Heinrich have quietly transformed their family plot into a near 100-hectare biodynamic emblem of modern Austrian wine. Working across both the limestone-tinged slopes of the Leithaberg and the warmer lowlands around Gols, they’ve shaped an estate that balances scale with integrity- every vine farmed, every step in the cellar, rooted in intention.

Since embracing biodynamics in the mid-2000s and adding full Demeter and Respekt-BIODYN certification, their philosophy has only deepened: “freedom through restraint”. Every action is deliberate- cover crops where needed, no irrigation, spontaneous ferments, gentle lees aging, and gravity-flow cellars. Today Amphoras stand alongside traditional barrels exemplifying the change of winemaking over the past two decades.

At the heart of Heinrich’s line-up are their Reds, especially Blaufränkisch and blends like Pannobile, anchored by a sense of place and texture, not power. The Freyheit range (meaning “freedom”) is a particularly expressive chapter: clean, clear, minimalist wines with elegance resulting in a true statement of natural winemaking. Whites and sparklers shine too, showing restraint and terrior rather than manipulation.

What sets Weingut Heinrich apart isn’t just their size or their accessories- it’s how thoughtfully they’ve scaled up while staying true to their biodynamic philosophy. Big enough to matter, but small enough to care- every bottle feels mindful, authentic and unmistakably Heinrich.
