A wine that plays by its own rules. Martin Diwald’s Gruner Veltliner Extra Brut is a sparkling outlier- organic, biodynamic and full of attitude. It’s 100% Gruner from loess rich soils in Wagram made in the traditional method (think Champagne just without the flash).

This is a zippy, herbal Sekt with whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and 18 months of lees aging to give it that soft-rich complexity. The final dosage lands around 5 g/L, keeping things extra-dry and refreshingly grounded.

In the glass there is a cocktail of herbs, green pepper, fresh orchard fruit, a nod of brioche and fine yeast from the lees. The palate zings with crispness, a delicate bead, and lingering savoury freshness that sidles you onto another mouthful without even asking.

It’s a great sparkler that doesn’t try to mimic Champagne but rather is biodynamic, distinctly Wagram and entirely itself. Wild yet measured. Bright but rooted.

Martin Diwald didn’t just inherit a vineyard, he inherited a legacy of revolt. His parents, Hans and Paula kicked off Austria’s organic wine revolution by converting their Wagram estate in Grossriedenthal to organic farming back in 1976, long before it was anything but fringe. Fast-forward to 2006 and young Martin stepped in, fresh out of viticulture studies and leapt headfirst into experimentation- one of his earliest moves? Full-on spontaneous fermentations using just native yeasts. It was so successful, it became their standard within a year.

His 20 hectares stretch across Wagram’s loess and limestone slopes, including some of the region’s top single vineyards (think the Austrian equivalent of Premier or Grand Cru sites) such as Goldberg, Eisenhut, Alte Weingärten and Diebsnest. Since 2023, he’s taken things a step further into certified biodynamics, joining the respected “respekt-BIODYN” circle to bring even more life and balance to the land.

His style? Think lean, elegant, cheeky. Across whites, reds, rosés, oranges—even cloudy styles—there’s a consistent fingerprint: wines that are soulful but grounded, with grip yet openness, personality without pretence. When he released his “Zündstoff” orange wine (just 350 bottles), he made it clear: “I don’t want to be pushed into the natural corner- I don’t want to be pigeon-holed.”

Martin lives by the idea that wine is meant to be fun and ever evolving, an invitation, not a lecture. It's wine with attitude but made with soul.
