Kotsifali is indigenous to Crete, and this is one of the finest examples to be found. From old, ungrafted vines at 800 meters of altitude, this is a true mountain wine, with immense freshness and clarity - like a mountain lake if it was made of sour cherry and cranberry with wild herbs growing on its shores, and stony pebbles on its bottom. Have we got a bit carried away with the metaphor? In any case, this is a beautifully pure wine, and we invite you to dip more than just a toe in.

AÔRI, meaning "mountain" in Cretan dialect, is a small project founded in 2021 by former sommelier Aimilios Andrei and winemaker Dimitris Skouras.

It began when Andrei discovered high-altitude (750–850m), ungrafted vineyards near Spina in the mountains of western Crete, including over 100-year-old Muscat of Spina vines and sites suited to the rare red grape Kotsifali.

The Kotsifali is the signature of the winery and has drawn comparisons to Comando G (Grenache from Gredos) for its transparent style focusing on fruit purity and expression of site. Despite not being originally enamoured with the Muscat variety, the exceptional terroir—schist soils over slate and cool mountain conditions—led them to produce distinctive, site-driven wines from this variety too, much more on the saline, mineral, acid-driven spectrum than the aromatic, blousiness the grape is associated with.

Overall, their low-intervention style emphasizes restraint and clarity, resulting in fresh, textured expressions, with a focus on indigenous varieties and the unique character of the region.
