Blank Bottle's Pieter Walser makes some of South Africa's coolest, and most delicious, wines. This is somewhat of a flagship, though his labels are constantly changing and innumerable. You won't find any mention of the grape variety(ies) on the bottle - part of his ethos of letting the wine speak for itself rather be prejudged, and its story is revealed through a QR code on the back label. Need to know though - this is knock-out good. Delicious fruit fruit - golden apples, apricots and ripe pears with a lovely lift of acidity on the finish, and a non-conformist zest that we can get behind. Also fantastic value.

Pieter Walser is one of the most energetic and productive winemakers out there. As he doesn't own his own vineyards, he spends half the year sourcing grapes from exceptional, but somehow under the radar, vineyards across South Africa. The rest of the year he spends harvesting and vinifying in the region of 47 different cuvees annually - each tiny quantity productions.

Every one of Pieter’s wines is a story, rather than a grape variety, and it’s the juice inside the bottle which reveals that story. With the benefit of anonymity, variety and regional identity take a back seat while parcel expression does the driving.

His origin story illustrates this credo, "don't judge a book by its cover". A woman wanted to buy wine and said "anything but Shiraz, I don't drink Shiraz". Of course, he poured her a Shiraz (unbeknownst to her) and she loved it. Hence the decision not to put grape varieties on the labels.

These are some of South Africa’s most original wines, made by one of South Africa’s most original winemakers.
