The Prünent grape is an ancient clone of Nebbiolo, local to this stunning high altitude corner of Piedmont surrounded by the alps, the Ossola valley. The grapes for the Diecibrente bottling all come from a single vineyard that dates to 1920 and the production is tiny, in the region of 2600 bottles a year. It is a top-flight, show stopping Nebbiolo with superb intensity, complexity and elegance.

Fourth generation brothers Marco & Matteo are proudly helming Cantine Garrone in the Valli d'Ossolane, 800 metres high in the Italian Alps.

The grapes come from their own vineyards as well as from a number of small winegrowers that they work closely with, purchasing grapes from ancient vineyards that would otherwise be in danger of disappearing, including some 200 year old pre-phylloxera pergola trained vines within the DOC Valli Ossolane.

The main varieties are Prünent and Croatina. Prünent is the local name for Nebbiolo, and is an ancient clone that actually predates the Nebbiolo found further down in Piedmont.

The inception of the DOC Valli Ossolane came about through the Garrone family successfully campaigning for the establishment of in 2009. When it first made appellation status, it wasn’t just a one valley appellation, it was more or less a one winery appellation. Still absolutely miniscule, but home to a small but growing, dynamic and committed cohort of the next generation Alpine growers.

The wines are mountain cool and elegant on the one hand, dark and intriguing on the other - all of them beautifully textured with vibrancy, depth, and immense drinkability. Superb, small grower, high altitude Nebbiolo at the fraction of the price of Barolo.
