The Cirò DOC in Calabria is home to the characterful Gaglioppo grape - one of great potential, but not easy to get right. Its high tannins and acidity can draw comparisons to Nebbiolo, and indeed in the right hands (which Cataldo Calabretta's unquestionably are) it can evoke similar moments of purity and beauty. Even in its youth it seems to wear the robes of wisdom, a brick red colour in the glass and on the nose notes of leather, liquorice and dried fruit. This is a thinking person's wine - something for those who want to spend time with their glass, get to know it and mull it over, with the bottle always in reach for a top up.

Here we are in Calabria, the southern tip of mainland Italy - or the toe of the boot hitting the ball that is Sicily - with
Cataldo Calabretta, one of the region's most important winemakers.

Cataldo represents the fourth generation of a family of winemakers in Ciro, Calabria's first DOCG and is the leader of a group winemakers working organically and with low intervention.

After studying Oenology and Viticulture at the Faculty of
Agriculture of Milan, he worked for a few years in a number of Italian wineries, before deciding to refurbish the old family cellars with his sisters.

The estate is run according to the principles of organic farming, an ethical choice, which year after year is paying off: they have renewed the vineyards, continuing to cultivate their vines on hilly land located in the heart of the DOC.
