Gaël Petit's most famous wine, “La Combe des Rieu”, was launched in the 2018 vintage and has quickly become a wine insider cult label. It is a light red wine from a blend of red, white and pink grapes from co-planted old bush vines from the domaine’s top vineyard. Think of it more like a light, yet intense, Chateauneuf du Pape: the style that Tavel, the icon region for rosé just across the Rhone river with the same flat white stones (lauzes), originally gained its reputation for. Like many of the most beautiful wines, this is slightly genre defying - straddling the territory between light red and intense rosé; what is certain is that the flavours are full whack with black cherry, botanical herbs and spice and the light tannins are balanced by a delicious refreshing quality. A red you can drink like a rose, yes please!

Gaël Petit has a rich family history in Tavel, including his great grandfather, a former mayor of Tavel, playing a leading role in the establishment of the Tavel AOC – France’s first region to receive appellation status for rosé. The family have been custodians of some of Tavel’s most admired vineyard plots, which Gaël inherited in the early 1990s.

Tavel is synonymous with top Provencal rosé, yet its reputation was weakening for years under commercial pressure to sell large quantities of uninteresting wine. Gaël has worked tirelessly to correct this trend, finding a way back to producing complex, ageworthy rosés that make the most of the region’s tremendous potential.

He converted the domaine to organic viticulture in the 2000s and was voted in as president of the growers’ association in 2013, using his role to mandate a reduced use of herbicides in the appellation.

Gaël launched his most famous wine, “La Combe des Rieu”, in the 2018 vintage. It is a micro-cuvée from a selection of old vines from the domaine’s top vineyard made using whole-cluster, infusion-style vinification with native yeast, drastically reduced sulfur usage, allowed the wine to complete its malolactic fermentation, and bottled it without fining or filtration. It is more like a light version of Chateauneuf du Pape’s fantastic reds, the style that Tavel originally gained its reputation for, than the now ubiquitous but bland rosés Provence has become famous for.
