Ebner Ebenauer, Poysdorfer Gruner Veltliner 2024

In the northern tip of Austria’s Weinviertel, Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer are proving just how much character this often overlooked region can deliver. They call themselves a “perfect contrast” with Manfred taking on the role of the traditionalist whiles Marion is the creative spark and it’s exactly this mix that gives their wines their edge.

The estate covers around 20 hectares spread across 38 small vineyard parcels, many of them home to old vines up to 70 years old or more. Since 2019 the whole estate has been organically certified, and in 2023 they joined respekt-BIODYN, further underlining their focus on soils and biodiversity. Everything here is worked by hand, with spontaneous ferments in the cellar and long, patient aging on the lees. Their motto is simple: let the vineyard set the pace, and don’t get in the way.

Grüner Veltliner is the backbone, showing every side of the grape from bright and peppery to dense, single-site wines with serious depth. Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and local reds like St. Laurent and Zweigelt also thrive, while their sparkling wines- made in the traditional method and aged for years- have gained a reputation as some of Austria’s best.

What makes Ebner-Ebenauer stand out is the balance between heritage and fearlessness. A 400-year-old cellar and ancient vines anchor them in tradition, but the creative energy between Marion and Manfred keeps things moving forward. Every bottle feels alive, precise, and unafraid to be individual.
