Kekfrankos “Szivem” (“my heart”) comes from the Baranya Valley in Szekszard, a cooler vineyard site that ripens later and brings freshness to the fruit. The grapes are farmed organically and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in a mix of oak, clay and steel to balance structure with vibrancy. Production is miniscule with a mere 2,600 bottles made each vintage, making this a real treasure.

The 2019 shows dark berries, spice, a touch of earth, framed by fine tannins and a lively backbone. It’s concentrated yet restrained- a wine that is serious without being overly heavy. This is Kekfrankos (aka Blaufrankisch) playing at the highest possible level and the ultimate end boss. It makes for a superb combo with roast meats, casseroles or rich vegetable dishes. The Heimann family have been shaping wine in Szekszard, southern Hungary, for generations. This is one of the country’s oldest red wine regions, known for loess soils, rolling hills, and a long tradition of elegant, spicy reds.

The current chapter belongs to Zoltan Heimann Jr., who has returned home after years of experience abroad. His focus is on giving local grapes like Kekfrankos and Kadarka the attention they deserve, showing how these varieties can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s great reds.

The estate is farmed organically, with native yeast fermentations and minimal intervention in the cellar. Aging happens in a thoughtful mix of clay, oak, and steel, chosen not for show but to bring out the character of each grape and site. The approach is modern, but always rooted in the local landscape and traditions of Szekszard.

What you get in the glass is not international polish, but wines that are unmistakably Hungarian: layered, vibrant, and full of energy. The Heimann family are helping to redefine what Szekszard tastes like today, keeping one foot in history while pushing confidently forward.
