This is an exceptionally voluptuous and honest Mosel Riesling with a true sense of place. From partially ungrafted vines on the blue slated Ellergrub vineyard. Next to the 2014, this is still a baby, but because of the grapes not fermenting to full dryness in the 2020 vintage of this wine, there is a generosity and unctuousness that puts it bang in its prime. The blue slate minerality that the Ellergrub vineyard is known for is accompanied by ripe orchard fruit, exotic yet tart tropical pineapple and passion fruit, plenty of floral aromatics, and fine acidity running through it like a silk thread. It is a voluptuous Riesling that is lush and mouth-filling, but still totally composed. A standout wine for lovers of honest Mosel Riesling with a true sense of place.

Gernot Kollmann is one of Germany’s most exciting winemakers, known for his uncompromising, terroir-driven Rieslings. The historic Immich-Batterieberg winery estate in the Mosel was in bad need of rescuing when Kollmann joined in 2009, restoring its former reputation after years of ove-rindustrialised production.

With roots dating back to the 12th century, the estate includes some of the region’s most dramatic and historically significant vineyards. Chief among them is Batterieberg, a steep, slate-rich site created in the 1840s using explosive charges—an origin that gives the vineyard its name.

Today, the 15-hectare estate encompasses top sites including Batterieberg, Ellergrub, Steffensberg, and Zeppwingert, many planted with rare ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines.

Kollmann’s wines are fermented with native yeasts, produced dry, and made with minimal intervention. The result: precise, powerful Rieslings with striking minerality and exceptional aging potential.

Certified organic since 2022.
