This is a rosé bursting with personality. It is fun to drink, yet also suave and sophisticated. There is a tendency to see rose as something to be chilled down and drunk in the sun, but those in the know have long been discovering more complex, textural roses from Spain and France: names like Pibarnon, Trevallon, Tempier and, of course, the poster child of extended ageing, Vina Tondonia Rosado.

Jose Luis Ripa is very much a fan of these more “serious” roses, and it shows. Strawberry and dried citrus peel meet bitter herbs, savoury spice and a touch of oxidative woodiness. Made from a blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo from 30+ year old bush vines, the wine spends 30 months on its lees in old oak barrels before release.

The connection to Tondonia is no coincidence either. Jose Luis Ripa is married to Maria José Lopez de Heredia, and his stylistic tribute to Tondonia Rosado feels both intentional and deeply personal. He makes barrel aged, late release rosado the focus of his range, and with such a compelling wine to show for it, we can only applaud.

José Luis Ripa is a Rioja native and a passionate researcher of the history of the region. In 2010 he started working at Lopez de Heredia where he met his wife Maria José López de Heredia, a force of nature in the wine scene of la Rioja who is now leading her family winery. José Luis developed a passion for rosé during his Master of Wine studies and, no doubt inspired by Lopez de Heredia's famous Tondonia Rosado, the reference for barrel aged, late release rosé. has made the pursuit of more complex and textural rosé the centre of his own winemaking venture.

In 2016 he managed to get hold of some old-vine fruit from the Najerilla Valley, a tributary of the Ebro, and made his first vintage of Ripa Rosado. The wine is mainly Garnacha with a touch of Tempranillo, the must is drawn-off slowly, then fermented and aged for 18-24 months in large oak vats, called bocoyes in Rioja. He only made 3,000 bottles in the first year, he's gradually increasing that, without losing the artisan vision of the project.
