In their 'faces' series of wines, Czech family winery Krasna Hora pays tribute to their grapes and wines as if they were beloved members of the family. Herr Gewurz, an orange/skin-contact interpretation of the aromatic varietal, they see as the idiosyncratic chap that's not always easy to get on with, but is loved for his honesty and frankness. In their own words: "A grape that’s not easy to deal with in a way that you feel comfortable with, especially in front of your winemaker friends. But give Gewurztraminer a week or two on skins and it becomes so frank that you’re happy to make him part of your family – if he’s ok with it, that is…"

Naturally vinified with spontaneous fermentation, it has a bright golden orange color with just a touch of cloudiness. The aroma is classic Gewurztraminer with roses and lychees with subtle bready hints. The palate is full with refreshing acidity and a hint of tropical fruit.

The leading men at Krásná hora are Marek Vybiral Sr. and his nephew Ondra Dubas, but they are such a family focused team that all the parents, grandchildren, wives, husbands, in-laws etc get shout outs for their involvement.

Marek followed his grandfather into winemaking, and started with his original plots, but excitedly added their namesake plots Krásná hora in Starý Poddvorov when he had the opportunity. On a south-facing slope with "awesome" loess soil at the top of the hill, first planted by Cistercian monks in the 13th century, they gradually planted seven vineyards here, mostly on neglected land.

Intuitively organic viticulture was always the family way - whether out of principle or lack of pressure or resource to commercialise and use harmful herbicides or other treatments (why buy chemicals when you can use natural fertilisers from your own farm animals?). Marek laments the spoiling of fine vineyard land in France and considers it lucky that this was not the case in his home. They are strong believers that knowing, respecting and caring for the land brings the greatest rewards and have followed a biodynamic approach that works for them, rather than blindly trying to adhere to a rule book.

A philosophical, but straightforward and honest man, Marek says, "My connection with the Earth is thus a natural one; as for the connection with the Universe, I’m still working on that."

Honesty informs everything they do, creating wines of great character and individualism.
