If you hear Rioja, you probably think of Tempranillo and sweet oak flavour. Think again - this unoaked style is old bush vine Garnacha dominant and puts the fruit front and centre. It is a lovely, juicy joy, emphasised by the whole berry fermentation (destemmed). Great with tapas and superb value.

The Línea Kármán wines are an exciting project from Gómez Cruzado, produced in and around the village of Badarán. Línea Kármán references the line dividing earth’s atmosphere from space, hence the cute astronaut labels.

The Gómez Cruzado winery dates back to 1886 when Angel Gómez de Arteche started to produce and bottle his own wine in Haro, at the very heart of Rioja Alta. Subsequently bought by Angel and Jesus Gomez Cruzado in 1916, and more recently by the Baños family, winemaker Juan Bautista Sáenz crafts wines from vineyards of old bush vines in the most elevated areas of Rioja Alta and Alavesa.

Like the Línea Kármán wines, Gómez Cruzado wines all emphasise freshness and elegance. Work in the vineyards is centred around preserving old bush-trained vines that create wines strongly rooted in their terroir. Historical practices of sustainable and thoughtful viticulture and winemaking are continued as part of the estate’s cultural legacy and its commitment to respecting and protecting the environment in the future. All vineyard work is done manually. The estate is examining the possibility of a move towards gaining organic certification.
