This is gorgeously classic Chianti from Radda, a slightly cooler higher elevation region in the Chianti hills. Super elegant with perfumed notes of cherry, dried herbs, floral tea, cinnamon and orange peel, and on the palate it is fresh, lifted, energetic and intense, with supple sandy tannins.
Monteraponi practice organic viticulture and their winemaking is low intervention and minimalist, with spontaneous fermentation in glass-lined cement tanks, without temperature control and without the addition of yeasts. This is followed by maceration on the skins for approximately 25 days with daily pumping over and punching down by hand. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, malolactic fermentation follows spontaneously. Aging takes place in large oval French or Slavonian oak barrels for at least 16 months. Aging concludes with a further month in cement, where the wine decants naturally before being gravity-fed bottled, always during the waning moon. This wine is unfiltered and unclarified.

Monteraponi is a medieval hamlet and estate in Radda in Chianti Classico, once linked to Baron Ugo, Marquis of Tuscany. Although the Braganti family has owned the vineyards since 1974, owner Michele Braganti began bottling the estate’s wines in 2003. The 12-hectare, certified-organic vineyard sits up to 570m on Albarese and Galestro limestone. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously in cement and aged in large, used oak casks, producing pure, vivid and age-worthy Chianti Classicos that have earned cult status in Italy.

Since 2003, Michele Braganti and his family have farmed organically, working with a light touch to let the high-altitude vineyards express the character of Chianti Classico. Sustainability is central to the estate’s work, including the use of solar energy to power parts of the winery.

Key wines include Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Il Campitello, a sought-after Sangiovese-based blend.
