The Moric label has become recognised the world over for brilliant age-worthy Blaufränkisch that elevates the traditional Austrian red grape variety from humble table to truly outstanding fine wine. Roland Velich, the legendary winemaker behind Moric, is expanding his reach across the Austrian border to neighbouring Hungary, where he is making thrilling, primarily, white wines as joint ventures with local winemakers under the Hidden Treasures label - including this gorgeous Furmint, Welschriesling and Hárslevelű blend from the Somlo region.

This is a delightfully pretty and creamy white with a fresh and lively bouquet of zesty lemon and lime, juicy pear, some tropical fruit, white flowers and leafy herbs. The sweet fruit is balanced by spice and salt with persistent, grippy length.

Furmint is the main focus of these white wines, which he sees as the white counterpart of Blaufränkisch, fulfilling the same purpose of celebrating place through variety - a true terroir wine.

Roland Velich arguably put Blaufränkisch, the flagship red variety from Burgenland, Austria, on the world wine map.

With a stubborn conviction that when treated delicately instead of over-extracting and soaking in new oak to please New World Parker-point oriented palates, it could be as expressive of place as the finest Pinot Noirs and Nebbiolos, he set about proving his philosophy.

In 2001 he left the family winery in Apetlon to start his own project focusing on Blaufränkisch - the now world-famous Moric winery (pronounced Moritz) in Lutzmannsburg (heartland for the variety in the Mittelburgenland).

Highlighting old vines and single site expressions, Velich's Blaufränkisch were recognised as serious and noteworthy wines and Velich himself has become increasingly influential at home as well as internationally for championing Blaufränkisch as a world class, fine wine variety.

He started the Hidden Treasures project in Tokaj in 2013, out of an obsession with the idea that wine transcends borders, and that Austria and Hungary share a deep and meaningful history and culture of winemaking as well as geological continuity.

In his own words, "Hidden Treasures is a continuation of the thought that guided me in the development of Moric. Trying to capture a region and represent it with means that are as pure and direct as possible. Old, traditional methods and full trust in the existing substance [...] I have decided to undertake this treasure hunt together with young, innovative winegrowers. We share the enthusiasm for wine and the willingness to get involved with the company. Because it is time to make this great wine culture accessible to the inclined public again in an original and authentic form."
