Frappato is the native grape of Vittoria in Sicily, producing its only DOCG: Cerasuolo di Vittoria, which is a blend with Sicily's other major red variety, Nero d'Avola. For this wine, Arianna Occhipinti celebrates organically and biodynamically grown old vine Frappato ias the solo star. Because of the grape's thick skins she chooses a long, slow skin contact maceration, gentle extraction and fermentation in concrete tanks.

The wine has an addictive quality, enticing you back into the glass for another sniff - everchanging aromas of pomegranate and cherries and smoke, flowers and blood orange; and a palate that is concentrated yet lifted and mineral and fresh. In Arianna's own words: "Frappato was born from my childhood dream of making a wine that tastes like the land I work, the air I breathe, and my own thoughts. It is tart, sanguine and elegant. It is Vittoria and the Iblei mountains. It is the wine that most resembles me, courageous, original and rebellious. It has peasant origins, which is why it loves its roots and the past it carries within.”

Sustainability-champion Arianna Occhipinti was tutored by her uncle Giustu Occhipinto, who owns and runs COS, one of Sicily's most celebrated estates. Arianna has been tending her family's vineyards since she was sixteen and making wine since 2004, initially in the family farmhouse, before moving to a purpose built cellar nine years later.

Arianna works all her vineyards using biodynamic principles and in the cellar her approach is hands off: natural yeasts, no temperature control, no fining, or filtration and minimal SO2 at bottling.

She believes that natural wines are ones made with sensitivity, care and respect. This makes it a human wine, and a healthy and sincere wine.

In the last few years, she has not only been focused on the Frappato di Vittoria and Nero d’Avola, but also on the soil and on the potential of the various districts or contrade of Vittoria and their particular influence on the final wines. Everything she does is a dedication to her land - the soil under the sky that she farms as a custodian for future generations.
