The Fürst family in Franken make benchmark German Pinot Noir, or Spätburgunder, and the 2022 Tradition is an absolute beauty from a magnificent vintage.

Tradition is their estate wine made from younger vines from two of their top "Grands Crus", the Centgrafenberg and Hundsrück, as well from old vines from the foot of the Centgrafenberg.

According to Germany specialist Stuart Piggott “the Fürst winery is the shining star [in Franken] and the 2022 vintage is the best ever for Sebastian Fürst.”

With beautiful, intense fruit on the nose, and trademark freshness and piquancy from the classic red sandstone soils of the region, this has everything you want from top German Pinot. Pure class.

Anyone who tastes a Fürst Spatburgunder becomes an immediate, lifelong fan, and we have no doubt that this wine will win over anyone not yet converted.

The Fürst family is famous for producing some of the best Spätburgunder in Germany, and credited with leading the quality revolution that has seen German Pinot Noir become admired as some of the best in class.

The family has been growing vines since 1639, and when Paul and Monika Fürst inherited Paul's father's winery in the heart of the Centgrafenberg vineyard in 1979, Burgundian-style successive inheritance meant that there was only 1.5 ha of vineyard left in their holding.

The family renovated and re-cultivated the particularly beautiful, steep parcels in the best sites in the area and gradually expanded the vineyard area to the current 21 hectares, 60% of which is planted to Spätburgunder. They produce three GGs (Grosses Gewächs, equivalent to Grand Cru): Centrgrafenberg, Schlossberg and Hundsrück.

Now their son Sebastian is at the helm and with his experience built in Burgundy, Alsace, Spain and South Africa, as well as with other German estates, they are going from strength to strength. In the vineyard he has converted to organic methods and increased vine density, as well as embarking on an extensive replanting program of both Burgundian and German Pinot Noir varieties.
