The region of Friuli in northern Italy is like a sweet shop for grown ups with a penchant for interesting, aromatic and pure white wines (and some delicious reds too). This one is a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Tocai Friulano, co-fermented according to Friulian tradition, which is incredibly challenging in terms of achieving perfect harmony - but the talented Scarbolos have succeeded wonderfully. With the rich foundation of the Chardonnay, the lifted freshness of the Sauvignon Blanc and a certain je ne sais quoi (but very possibly the touch of botrytis) of the Tocai Friulano, this is interesting in the best possible way - complex and classy and utterly delicious.

Scarbolo is a third-generation, family-run estate located in the Friuli Grave region of northeastern Italy, specifically in the village of Lauzacco. Founded in 1982 by Valter Scarbolo and now helmed by his children, Lara and Mattia, the winery is a leading advocate for the "rehabilitation" of Pinot Grigio, moving away from industrial mass-production to showcase the grape's true depth and complexity.

Managing 30 hectares of certified sustainable and increasingly organic vineyards, the family focuses on low-yield, single-plot expressions of both native varieties like Friulano and Refosco, alongside international grapes like Chardonnay and Merlot. Their philosophy, often symbolised by the wheel which is their logo, emphasizes constant motion and a patient approach to maturation, often aging wines for several years before release to ensure they fully reflect the unique terroir of the region.
