This is about as far away as you can get from the pale and neutral Pinot Grigio ubiquitous to pubs across the country. You might even be hard pressed to believe it is in fact Pinot Grigio.  Extended skin contact, including some stems, in open tonneaux makes for an intensely phenolic, textural, full-bodied wine and give the wine its mind-bending deep coppery cherry rose colour, reminding you that Pinot Grigio grapes are in fact a quite dark pinky grey - something we perhaps associate more with the riper Pinot Gris wines of Alsace. Red apple, ginger warmth, smokiness, almonds, floral and herbal notes - there's a lot going on and it is all stunning. Category defying and absolutely compelling.

Scarbolo is a third-generation, family-run estate located in the Friuli Grave region of northeastern Italy, specifically in the village of Lauzacco. Founded in 1982 by Valter Scarbolo and now helmed by his children, Lara and Mattia, the winery is a leading advocate for the "rehabilitation" of Pinot Grigio, moving away from industrial mass-production to showcase the grape's true depth and complexity.

Managing 30 hectares of certified sustainable and increasingly organic vineyards, the family focuses on low-yield, single-plot expressions of both native varieties like Friulano and Refosco, alongside international grapes like Chardonnay and Merlot. Their philosophy, often symbolised by the wheel which is their logo, emphasizes constant motion and a patient approach to maturation, often aging wines for several years before release to ensure they fully reflect the unique terroir of the region.
