Hannes Storm's wines from South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde region offer brilliant articulations of this exceptional cool climate terroir. The Ridge Chardonnay especially evokes real sense of place with the low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil of this plot shining through in the subtlety of the fruit, with ripe apple, lemon balm and peach notes alongside crushed stone. Very pure, very elegant, very accomplished.

This is an exciting recent project from South Africa, with great credentials. Hannes Storm spent 13 years as head winemaker at Hamilton Russell, before going it on his own (with wife Nathalia) and purchasing two prime vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

Here he explores the three distinct terroirs through his classy, expressive Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs - Vrede from low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld (‘Buck Veld’) shale soil in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Ignis from decomposed granite soil in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Ridge also from low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge.

Production is tiny, and the approach classically Burgundian, with great care in the vineyard, minimal intervention in the winery to preserve the terroir character of the wines, and subtle new French oak to give these wines exceptional structure and polish.
