An act of the gods - "Deus Ex Machina"  - such was the feeling at Sugrue about the 2016 vintage that was saved as if by a miracle of the weather gods, producing stunning wines against the odds. 2018 was a more straightforwardly dreamy vintage, but the name of the Rose stuck, and this wine truly is the weather gods in bottle. The warmth and sunshine of the growing season leap out of the glass with juicy raspberry, sharp blood orange and happy apples (happy apples? we're going with it...). It is relaxed yet composed, ample yet tight, creamy yet intense. Generosity and joy in gorgeous bubby vinous form. Yes please!

70% Pinot Noir (accounting for that gorgeous berry and red apple fruit) 20% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay from Coldharbour Vineyard in West Sussex. 100% fermented in stainless steel, without malolactic fermentation. 20% Pinot Noir red wine addition. 4.5 years on lees.

The buzz around Dermot and Ana Sugrue’s stunning wines shows no signs of abating. Hailed by the wine expert greats as “the best winemaker in England” (Stephen Spurrier) and “Spectacular. Honestly England’s best” (Hugh Johnson), the former chief winemaker at Wiston keeps turning out fantastic wines at his South Downs estate, alongside his wife Ana, who brings invaluable experience from top Austrian wineries Schloss Gobelburg and Umathum.

Dermot started out on his own in 2006, planting a small vineyard at Storrington Priory at the foot of the South Downs in West Sussex. His hopes for a first vintage in 2008 were “troubled” by flocks of birds eating all the grapes, but in 2009 the dream came true – his first vintage of The Trouble with Dreams was a roaring success and garnered immense critical acclaim.

The couple are firmly cementing the South Downs as terroir heaven for world class sparkling wine, and each of their cuvees from their key sites, Storrington, Mount Harry and Coldharbour Vineyard and most recently Bee Tree, are distinctive and full of their own character, highlight the excellent diversity of this region.

The cult status of these wines could not be more deserved.
