This single vineyard Grüner Veltliner from the Ried Goldberg Laaerberg showcases Zahel's ambitious Burgundian-inflected though idiosyncratically Austrian style. This is seriously grown up Grüner Veltliner (from old vines, some 65 years old) with stunning complexity and nuance, and the vineyard's black earth soil with calcerous loess and glacial gravel dating from the ice age with a high iron content contribute a delicate minerality that makes this wine unique. Aged in used Stockinger barrels (proudly Austrian-made, the Ferraris of barrels), this is an intense and complex wine, with ripe apple and tropical fruit, very linear acidity and a long, satisfying finish, that will stand up beautifully to more powerful dishes including rich seafood, roast pork and blue cheese.

The Zahel family winery has a long and proud history in Vienna and Alex very much preserves and builds upon that history but he’s also right up at the cutting edge of contemporary thinking for the region as well. Alex Zahel is the 4th generation of Zahel's, having been passed the torch by his uncle Richard. Since taking the lead, he’s proud to continue the tradition of ushering Vienna’s most charming wines from the vineyard to the bottle. As in the past, Richard works carefully to maintain the vineyards and manages the tradition steeped Heurigen. Alex’s wife Hilary works alongside her husband at the winery. Together, this small yet mighty team ensures that the family business continues to grow.

Alex makes a number of different Gemischter Satz, his Wiener Gemischter Satz is setting the standard and is super approachable whilst the Nussberg has distinctly more weight and feels more Burgundian in style. He also produces a truly enticing range of wines which started out as experimental bottlings but which now make up a regular, though individually very limited, part of his range.

The Zahel vineyards are both organic and Demter biodynamic certified across all 95 parcels within the city limits of Vienna. The Zahel's are also proud that they will be one of the first European wineries to attain the regenerative farming certification, which takes into account the human impact of farming and its management to promote the regeneration of soil, water, air and biodiversity for the whole ecosystem.
